Sarracenia oreophila, or the Mountain Pitcher Plant, is the most endangered of all Sarracenia species, now found in only a few isolated mountain sites across North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. This particular clone originates from Sand Mountain in Marshall County, Alabama, one of the species’ primary natural habitats. Sand Mountain is known for its highland ridges and valleys, and remains one of the few remaining strongholds for wild populations of S. oreophila. This is an exceedingly rare and special clone.
Due to its critically endangered status, conservation efforts are in place to protect remaining wild populations. The Atlanta Botanical Garden runs an ongoing propagation and reintroduction program. Our plants were originally acquired through a long-standing Canadian nursery that has been dedicated to propagating and preserving this species for over 20 years.
This clone produces richly colored, heavily veined pitchers and fragrant yellow flowers. Unlike most species, it primarily forms pitchers in spring and early summer, often going dormant earlier in the season. It is also exceptionally cold-hardy, owing to its native snowy mountain habitat, and can survive temperatures as low as –20 °C. The name “oreophila” literally means “mountain-loving,” derived from Greek (oros = mountain, philos = loving).
