Sarracenia oreophila, or the Mountain Pitcher Plant is the most endangered of all sarracenia species, existing in just a few mountain sites in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Throughout these locations, there are an estimated 34 small sites containing less than 50 plants each. Because of this S. oreophila is listed as critically endangered. Plans are in place to protect existing populations, and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens has a propagation program and reintroduction program underway. Our plants were acquired through a local nursery in Canada that has been responsible for propagating and preserving this species for the last 20+ years.

This species produces tall, lime green pitchers with red venations and fragrant yellow flowers. Unlike most species, it primarily forms pitchers in spring and early summer. It is an incredibly cold-hardy species, due to its native snowy mountainous growing conditions, and can survive temperatures as low as -20c. "oreophila" literally means "mountain-loving" (Greek: oros = mountain, philos = loving).
